LONGBENTON CADETS ARE FLYING HIGH!

Three Air Cadets from Longbenton are on cloud nine after earning their flying wings! 

After undergoing a selection day, which assessed candidates’ aptitude, knowledge and skills in a simulated environment, three young people from 2344 (Longbenton) Squadron earned themselves a prestigious flying scholarship. James Douglas, 18, Harry Dixon, 17 and Cameron McDonald, 17, went to Tayside Aviation, Dundee, to undertake an intense two-week, fully sponsored, course. James said, “It offered an amazing experience; learning to fly was incredible.” “It was hard too,” added Harry, “I learned where I needed to improve and the instructors helped me to focus on these areas, which helped to increase my confidence.” “I was really nervous, at first, when I flew my first sortie,” said Cameron. “I had a bad landing on my final practice flight but the pilot told me to relax and offered some final tips before getting out. “Once I spoke with air traffic, to get permission to take-off, I was away and loved every minute of it. “Flying solo is, by far, one of the best experiences I have ever had,” Cameron said. Squadron Officer Commanding, Flight Lieutenant Gary Richardson said; “We are all extremely proud of the cadets’ achievements and it is an example to all of what can be attained through hard work, ambition and courage.” There are several scholarships available to Air Cadets each year. These are sponsored by the Royal Aero Club, the Air League Educational Trust, the RAF Charitable Trust, the Geoffrey DeHaviland Foundation, Babcock Defence Services, the RAF Association and the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators.
